/ About the project

A video that is different every time you watch it. Quantum Superposition is a two-second video representation of quantum superposition.

Using a novel, handcrafted technique, Nahiko Mikasa has created a truly unique artwork.

Natively digital, it is designed to be experienced where today's audience resides: on the Internet.

Modern computers operate with a specific frame rate. This means that even if a video is filmed at 120 frames per second, a screen with a 60 frames per second rate will only display 60 of those frames.

With this in mind, Nahiko decided to hack the video display process. He crafted a video where every second frame is different, effectively creating a hidden video that isn't displayed.

The twist? Nahiko designed the video with a frame rate of about 119 frames per second instead of 120. As a result, the screen gradually shifts from one "side" to the other, creating an artifact that can be viewed twice, each time with different meanings.

Tip: You can "right-click -> open video in a new tab" on the video above to confirm it's only 2s long.

The video features a hand-sculpted 3D model, created and rendered in Blender. To emphasize that the art lies not in the visual itself, but in the superposition and technique, Nahiko chose not to let the render process complete.

As a result, each frame contains significant. (and unpredictable) noise from the 3D rendering process.
